--- Cameroon Language --

Cameroon languages differ from region to region.

It's known that more than 230 languages exists in Cameroon.

This number is however conflicting, as some research has come up with different numbers.

But it is important to note that these languages include fifty-five Afro-Asiatic languages, two Nilo-Saharan and 173 Niger-Congo languages.

Official Languages of Cameroon

English and French are the official languages of Cameroon.

This is as a result of the fact that the country was both a colony of Britain and France, from 1916-1961.

The country strives towards bilingualism.

But it's worth noting that few Cameroonians speak both languages fluently.

Some Cameroonians don't even speak any of the languages.

Pidgin English

Pidgin English is the Lingua Franka of Cameroon. The language developed a long time ago, as far back as the colonial days. It's a mixture of English Language and some local words.

Pidgin English is also a language of some West African countries like Nigeria and Ghana, which is used with little variations in these countries. But citizens from these different countries understand each other.

It's officially used in many cycles including the church. It's mostly spoken in the English Speaking parts of the country. Cameroonians love speaking it, especially those who live abroad. It identifies them.

Fran-anglais

Frananglais (maybe with a different spelling) is a relatively new pidgin, which is fast emerging in Urban areas and locations where Anglophones and Francophone Cameroonians live and interact such as Douala and Yaounde.

As the name suggest, it's a combination of both French and English. It's very common among youngsters, especially city boys. Popular singers use it in their songs.

Below is a list of all languages found in Cameroon, arranged according to regions.
