2. FUNIC DOMESTIC WORKERS TRAINING CENTRE
Tens of millions of domestic workers world-wide, and hundreds of thousands in Cameroon, suffer exploitation and abuse. Confined within an invisible and poorly regulated segment of the labour market, they are mainly unorganized and without knowledge of their legal rights. This project under the theme "Exploited, undervalued - but essential" is part of an initiative towards promoting more effective legal protection, decent work and empowerment in the domestic employment sector.

New standards on domestic work will present an unprecedented opportunity to bring into the mainstream workers who were once deemed to be outside the Cameroon labour legislation constituency and to provide guidance to employers and households to facilitate access to decent employment conditions for this historically disadvantaged group, mainly women and girls.

This project will clearly determine the responsibility of the “client” (household) in the context of worker’s employment. It will educate the communities to recognize the importance of domestic workers that they are an integral part of the economy and that domestic work is not degrading or menial.

The horrible conditions of domestic workers around our local communities has contributed to this global realisation that domestic workers are deserving of our constant attention and our concerted efforts to establish decent work for them.

Whilst we have done a large amount of work around specialisation and professionalization of inspectors, domestic work because of its character including its hidden nature provides specific challenges some outside the scope of what inspectors are required to do such as human trafficking. Therefore there remains a need to not only be sensitive to these new demands but also to be able to respond to these challenges effectively and efficiently.

Domestic workers, now more than ever, need support to assist them to collectively discuss and find solutions to the issues facing their sector.
The institute shall support trainees in finding dignifying and suitable employment upon graduation.

We shall place domestic workers and others in decent employments that dignify them as human beings.

The Institute plays a crucial role in this regard. It offers training courses on all subjects relevant to decent work on the continent. For Africa, in addition to standard courses, it runs tailor-made courses on priority areas, such as:
• House keeping
• Nanny training
