This Diocese was created on the 18th of March 1982 by pope John Paul II, with its territory separated from the Archdiocese of Bamenda but witnessed the Episcopal Ordination of His Lordship, Bishop Cornelius Fontem Esua, as its pioneer Bishop on the 8th of December 1982. When the latter was appointed Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Bamenda, Mgr. George Nkuo took over and was ordained on the 8th of September as the Bishop of Kumbo diocese. The seat of the Diocese, Kumbo is about 110 Kilometers from the regional capita, Bamenda and about 70 Kilometers from Nkambe, Donga Mantung Division-the administrative headquarters.
Kumbo Diocese covers two out of the seven administrative divisions that make up the North West Region of the country-Bui and Donga-Mantung divisions with about 8,000 kilometers square. The terrain within this surface area is very hilly. The Diocese shares national boundaries with Nigeria and local boundaries with the Western Region, Boyo, Menchum and Ngohketunja Divisions in the North West.
The diocese totals a Catholic population of over 151000, with 25 parishes, 88 priests, 147 female religious, and 184 educational institutions
Christians (from so many denominations), Moslems and the adherents of the African Traditional Religion are the three main religious groups that make up the Diocese.Christians are ncouraged to form Small Christian Communities and commissions.
The Diocese is is structured like any other Catholic Diocese into: individual Christians, Christian families, small Christian communities, mission stations, parishes, zones or deanaries and then the Diocese.
Its also consist of the Diocesan Pastoral Centre that was opened in 1994, run by a coordinator, assisted by three full-time pastoral team members. These people coordinate and follow up all diocesan pastoral activities. Their goal is the implementation of the Pastoral Plan, and the new way of being church.
All diocesan formation seminars are organized and run in this Pastoral Centre, and it covers the areas of written press, audio visual, electronic media, Internet, printing and the book centre.
It has a staff of 7 persons who are involved and working in various sectors of the media, with the execution of all construction, mechanical and technical works in the Diocese. Its departments are made up of various sectors- building, Motor mechanics, weltering and carpentry,
