The school was set up in 1982. It comprises the main campus in nations capital, Yaounde, the annex in Buea in the South West Region of the Country and two public works centers in Akonolinga and Garoua.
The school is placed under the technical supervision of the minister of public works and under the academic supervision of the minister of higher education.
The school engages in initial training, further training, re-training, specialization, and applied research in the domain of public works. The training and retraining centers around civil engineering, rural engineering, town planning, energy and environmental engineering, land survey, etc.
Training is allocated to the various campuses in the country as follows: Assistant technicians, technicians and senior technicians are trained in the Buea annex campus, and then further training takes place at the CMTP campuses in Garoua and Akonolinga, and the main campus in Yaounde trains students in specialized masters.
The main campus in Yaouande has been working in partnership with the University of Padoua since 2010.
